Detective Comics #27 (DC, 1939) CGC FN/VF 7.0 Off-white pages. The best copy of Batman's first appearance to come onto the market in a decade! This one's on the short list of the most desirable comic books we've ever offered, and it bestows serious pop-culture bragging rights upon the winning bidder.
The 2021 movie The Batman will be the tenth movie since 1989 to star the character, and any American from ages 5 to 95 knows him. And now that third-party certification of comic books has been part of the hobby for more than 20 years, it's well-established how few attractive, unrestored copies of this milestone exist.
The eye appeal of this one is quite special, and will likely make you wonder why it didn't even grade higher than Fine/Very Fine 7.0. By all means take a close look, and zoom in on the large scans our website provides. We believe that will only confirm your initial impression.
While any copy of this key comic is something special, we think this one stands up extremely well against any we've seen offered to the public. The yellows on the cover are clean and unsmudged, and few surviving copies can make that claim. And notice that the back cover is also appealingly clean. The book is also well-centered, with none of the back cover ad wrapping around to the front. Also note that this book has no codes or markings of any sort, which can be said of very few 1939 comics!
Detective Comics #27 is generally considered second only to Action Comics #1 as the most desirable comic in the hobby. Detective did briefly hold the #1 spot in one of the annual rankings of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide some years ago, and is the only serious contender to ever dislodge Action #1 in the future. Batman is certainly more of a force at the movie box office lately than Superman, so it's not out of the question that one day his first appearance could reign as the top book.
Not only is this the debut of a character that has become a pop culture icon, the book is graced by one of the more distinctive and memorable covers of the entire Golden Age, drawn by Bob Kane. A milestone in anyone's book!
